NACDD is the only organization representing all state and jurisdictional chronic disease staff, dedicated to building capacity and making public health good for the public.
Message from the CEO
 
Recently, I was honored to be asked to join the Population Health Alliance Board of Directors.  The alliance is comprised of an expansive network of providers and insurers in the healthcare industry.  They have a desire to better understand public health and work with the public health community and are looking forward to NACDD helping build bridges to promote health, prevent disease and reduce costs.  I am hopeful that this alliance and other business groups like it, can accelerate our vital work in states, territories, communities and tribes.  I encourage our members to visit www.PopulationHealthAlliance.org and also to contact me for introductions or further information.  Likewise, I would love to know of other business groups that you have identified as ‘friends of public health’ in your state so that we can continue to build upon your success.  Issues we could think about collaborating on might be: reimbursement for prevention services, blood testing standardization and an expansion of covered health benefits.  These are just some of the public health issues that states, federal agencies and private industry should be able to solve faster — together.

NACDD Congratulates the 2014 Million Hearts Hypertension Control Challenge Champions
The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors is pleased to share the exciting news released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Million Hearts, a national initiative striving to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017. Read more.
District of Columbia’s Department of Health "Own Your Health Campaign"
The Department of Health Bureau of Cancer and Chronic Disease has launched OWN YOUR HEALTH, a cross-cutting media campaign designed to increase awareness among D.C. residents about resources and tools to empower a proactive, personalized approach to wellness. Read more.
Call for Abstracts Deadline Extended to March 3!
NACDD is now seeking abstracts for poster presentations for the 2015 Environmental Public Health Tracking Virtual Conference. Read more.
Job Opportunity: NACDD Seeks Program Quality Assurance Coordinator (PQAC)  
This position will report to the Chief Executive Officer in Atlanta, GA. The position will be responsible for monitoring and evaluating all NACDD programs/projects. Read more.
Partnerships Working to Sustain Arthritis Evidence-based Programming in Two States 
Last February, four local agencies received funding from NACDD to address multiple chronic conditions, specifically arthritis and the chronic disease risk factor of physical inactivity. Read more.
NACDD has received funding from CDC, for 3 states to participate in a 2015 STAR visit to their state. STAR is designed to assess chronic disease prevention programs in state and territorial health departments, supporting development, implementation and evaluation of chronic disease prevention and control efforts. Read More
NACDD Transitions to Quarterly Surveys 
NACDD consistently receives requests to collect information from NACDD’s membership related to various aspect of state and territorial health departments. In efforts to reduce the number of survey requests NACDD will begin combining our survey requests into one comprehensive, quarterly survey. These surveys are designed to help NACDD members receive the TA and information that is most relevant to them. 
Smoke-Free Housing Trend Growing in Colorado
A growing number of market-rate and affordable housing providers are adopting restrictions on smoking in Colorado multi-unit properties, including buildings managed by public housing authorities. About 15% of the 3,400 Colorado no-smoking properties have implemented policies that cover the entire property. Read more.

NACDD Nominated for Atlanta's Healthiest Employer

NACDD is proud to have been nominated for the Atlanta Business Journal's 2015 Healthiest Employer for the 6th year in a row. Initiatives like our daily "Walk With the CEO," on-site access to the Highwood's gym, and a Fruit Bowl competition (charting each employees daily fruit & vegetable consumption) are all a part of NACDD's healthy workplace! 
Collaborative Partnerships in Arthritis 

This month, NACDD highlights two of our national partnerships in Arthritis- a project with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), and a project collaborating with American Physical Therapist Association (APTA), American Chronic Pain Association, NACDD and Westat. Read More
NACDD Consultant Dissertation Work to be Published in American Journal of Public Health
Jeanne Alongi, MPH, DrPH, Senior Public Health Consultant for NACDD, has a paper coming out in the April edition of the American Journal of Public Health on her dissertation work looking at state health department effectiveness. Read More

Engaging Employers in Changing Health Care
Health care leaders in New Mexico, including employers and other key stakeholders, are finding creative ways to improve the state’s delivery system while managing overall costs. Together, these disparate groups are crafting ways to ensure that health care payments are tied to the value, and not the volume, of the services delivered. Read more.
New RWJF Program for Public Health Nurse Leaders
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has created a unique new leadership development program aimed at building the leadership capacities of public health nurses. Public Health Nurse Leaders: Leveraging Nurse Leaders to Build a Culture of Health is a two-year program to develop up to 24 senior level Public Health Nurse Leaders (PHNLs) to build partnerships around a Culture of Health, and to integrate that work into the existing state action coalitions of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action. The National Physical Activity Plan Congress Convenes Feb 23-24
In 2010, a comprehensive plan was released outlining a set of policies, programs, and initiatives designed to achieve the NPAP vision. Much progress has been made, and now it’s time to celebrate, evaluate and collaborate on the next iteration of the Plan. The NPHAP Congress convenes February 23rd & 24th in DC. Read more
TRUTH Campaign Launches "Left Swipe Dat" Video



The TRUTH Campaign has launched a new national media campaign aimed at discouraging smoking among teens and young adults by appealing to dating app culture.  Learn more.
Arthritis among Veterans

In a recent CDC MMWR report, arthritis is more common among veterans, both men and women, than non-veterans overall and by most categories of age and race/ethnicity. Looking at BRFSS data from 2011-13, the CDC found that, specifically in the veteran population, about one in three veterans (35%) have arthritis.
